June Cake July 13, 2013

June’s cake is a Berry Ice Cream cake. And no, I did not skip it, it looks too delicious!  I have just been too busy doing projects around the house that June came and went without getting the monthly cake done. I am glad I waited because this is the kind d of cake you want on a hot summer day. This is made from a chocolate cake and strawberry ice cream. And since our weather here has turned hot, the timing is perfect.
Following the recipe from Food Network magazine I made the chocolate cake and allowed it to cool. Leveling off the top of one round I put strawberry ice cream on top of it and then placed the second round on top. As much as I tried to pile the ice cream on thick and smooth like the picture I could not. The ice cream began melting and running down the sides of the cake. How did they do it?  Once I had the ice cream on, I placed the whole cake in the freezer to refreeze the ice cream. Before serving I pulled the cake out of the freezer. OH NO!… Some of the ice cream had melted before refreezing and was now around the bottom of cake. I finished the cake off by whipping up cream…which did not want to whip up thick (should have just used Cool Whip) and placed  fresh sliced strawberries on top. And since the cream was not thick this began to slide down off the top taking the strawberries with it.  I quickly snapped the pic and we ate.

The cake was cold and tasted fine. I liked the mix of the chocolate cake and strawberry ice cream.

I am sure the master chiefs would disagree with me, BUT LOOKS AREN’T EVERYTHING, at least not in the Wernex household…just saying!

Crate bookshelf

I have been wanting a bookshelf in our computer room for some time now. Through my numberous searches I found either really cheap ones that would not stand up to my amount of books, or shelves that were too expensive. Thanks to Pinterest I found a DIY bookshelf that I thought I could do. And here it is….

Crate bookshelf

Using wood crates I purchased at Michael’s (with a coupon for all of them!) I had a plan.   I started by sanding the crates and making sure the slates were secured.  I then used polyurethane and applied two coats to the inside and out of each crate (I chose to keep  the wood natural to match our furniture).  Once dry I secured the crates together using brackets and screws I purchased at Home Depot.  This project took me about 8 hours and I enjoyed doing it.

And WALA!  I made the bookshelf…all by myself…Just saying!

Awkward! June 29, 2013

Donning my name tag I began to move about the crowd looking for familiar faces, names, anything. Boy, did I feel awkward.

A couple of weeks ago I was notified of my high school   30th class reunion (the one I actually graduated from – see post Class Reunion).  Ok…I should go check it out.  I met up with a good friend of mine and we went together.

I attended this same class reunion for the 20 year version.  I must have forgotten what that was like or I would not have gone to this one.

So as I was making the rounds reading people’s names, and they mine, there was this moment of silence and a look of non-recognition on both our faces.  “No I don’t remember you,” and moving on…  After about an hour of this I sat and crowd watched.  It was then I realized that I didn’t fit in with any of these people in high school and I still didn’t fit in with them now.  What was I thinking?  There was no one there I wanted to see much less have a conversation with.  So I left.  It wasn’t that no one remembered me, because two actually did.  But the people there were not my people…not the handful of people I ran with in high school.  Sitting there I had the same lonely feeling I had back then.  I wasn’t part of the “in” crown or the “out crowd”.  I was just one in the crowd.

So now I have this dilema…I still have another class reunion in August to go to (the high school I didn’t graduate from).  Basically this would be my old neighborhood kids from grade school.  I was kind-of looking forward to that one. Should I go?  If so, I intend to drag my husband with me so if I get that awkward feeling, again, we will at least have a date night out of the deal.

A week ago I heard Jase on Duck Dynasty say this about attending his class reunion, “If I haven’t talked to you in 20 years there has to be a reason why.”  Well said and I am just saying it too!

What to paint an eleven year old girl’s room? June 21, 2013

What to paint an eleven year old girl’s  room?  With my son’s room done I started right in on Emma’s room.  The only problem was I couldn’t get a handle on what color I wanted to paint.  She wanted a dark purple with polka dots, and I wanted…well I really didn’t know.  We spent hours searching online and Pinterest for ideas.  Made a trip to the paint store for samples to think about.  This was driving me nuts.  Finally I settled on a light gray thinking we would accent with polka dots.  That is NOT what we ended up with.

After a two and a half hour visit to the paint store, (long story) I walked away with three different gallons of three different colors.  Only one of which I had even wanted or liked.  What a disaster! At my wits end I thought I could make something work.

I painted the bottom portion of the walls in a gorgeous medium purple color.  Then began painted the top half in a surprise color from the paint store.  This looked green…not gray.  So another trip to get paint (from a different store) and I tried it again.  This time is was the perfect shade of gray.  I then painted a stripe between the two colors around the room.

Since her furniture was white (except the bed) and the bedspread and curtains were already purple I only needed to do some wall decor. metal treeSAMSUNG

I found this metal tree at Hobby Lobby. Not exactly polka dots but liked that it had purple and gray and pulled in some other colors.SAMSUNG

We purchased her letters all so at Hobby Lobby and then a friend of mine painted polka dots on it to match the tree.

My husband made these boxes out of left over wood from my son’s headboard.  I painted them purple on the inside and white on the outside.  These we will hang in her room.  I all so found a water-color painting she had made this year in school.  It had the colors of the tree in it as well.  I had a frame and painted it purple to match.  Now to get Jim to get these hung up.

She originally had two twin beds in there.  We kept one and slid the mattress  of the other underneath it to pull out like a trundle bed for friends.  We placed her bed along the wall to give it a day bed look.  I am still looking for pillows to put on it.

I must say this looks like a teen girl’s room!  It turned out great, not what we first had in mind, but great none the less.  And Emma and I have had fun putting it together, together!

Think I am done paintingfor a while. Just saying.

It Is All About the Projects!

Summer is in full swing in my household and being an educator I am home enjoying it, or should I say working it!  It is all about the projects!

I start off every summer with a list of projects I want to accomplish.  You know, the ones that need to be done but there is never enough time or energy to do them.  So I hit my summer vacation running.  Both my youngest children wanted me to repaint their bedrooms.  It was time to do away with the little kid look and give each of them a big-boy and big-girl style.

Ein’s room was in yellow and decorated with John Deere signs.  And so I began removing border and repainting the color of MY choice.  That is right, I chose! He had wanted some hideous lime green color (not in my house) and so I surprised him with the one color he did not want…gray.  At first he was not happy, stating the color was depressing.  I told him, “Trust me. It will look good when I am done.” To add color to the room I decided to do a couple of stripes in a yellow/gold color in opposite corners.  This he liked.

As he has a king size bed, I knew he needed a headboard to make the room look more complete.  After searching on Pinterest I decided we could make our own (rather my husband could make it.) So with an idea in mind off to the lumber store we went.  The headboard took no time in making and added the finishing touch to room, matching the natural wood furniture.

We started with a 5 foot tall headboard but once we got it in the room we decided it was a little too tall.  So Jim cut off 6 inches from each leg post and then we attached it to the bed frame.

Ein thought this was cool!

I purchased some rope lights and am going to put them under the top rail of the headboard.  I think this will make me cooler than I already am.  Momma done good. Just saying!

May Cake June 1, 2013

After cruising through April with no cake, I finally got the May cake done (better one day late than none).  Cookies-and-Cream.  It was worth the wait!

It is made with a basic vanilla cake recipe, topped with a butter cream frosting and crunched up Oreo cookies.  Can’t hardly mess this one up, but I did!

The cake batter was thick, making the cake more dense after baking instead of airy and fluffy.  Thinking I might have added one scoop to much of flour.  It still tastes like vanilla cake though.  Frosting was easy to make and turned out thick and spreadable.  (I was a little worried about where the 3 sticks of butter was going to go, from the frosting to my hips I’m guessing!)  Emma helped make the frosting and she had a little mishap with the vanilla extract, putting in more than the recipe called for.  But you couldn’t tell.  Emma applied the frosting to the cake and was trying out some techniques she had seen from the Cake Boss show.  She really did a nice job!  Then she applied the crunched up Oreo cookies.

As usual I did not waste the top I had cut off the bottom layer, so I spread frosting on one half, sprinkled on Oreos, and folded the top over for a cake sandwich.  We promptly sat down and ate it.

Another successful cake made, and a few memories to go with it.

Class Reunion

“I hope someone remembers me.”

I just received an invitation to my 30th high school class reunion.  I did not graduate from that high school.  I grew up with all of them until we moved in 7th grade.  So I was surprised when I got the email inviting me to come.    At first I was excited, then became nervous.  I haven’t seen these people since 7th grade.  Will I remember them?

Over the years I have wondered where some were at, searching on Facebook and Classmates.  A time or two I have even dug out the old yearbooks and reminisced awhile…playing kickball in the street beside our house, the miles we put on our bikes riding around the neighborhood and then farther (not sure my mom knew about those times), walking to and from school with friends, a stolen kiss in the coat closet, being one of the fastest runners in the school, collecting a half a million bottle caps.   Not all my memories of grade school were pleasant ones…I was always the last to be picked for teams at recess, the nickname one boy gave me, the slumber party I left early from.

Thanks to technology I was able to open up the class page on Facebook and see who had RSVP they would be attending.  Some names I knew, some I did not. One RSVP post said  “I hope someone remembers me.”  That really got me thinking.  I wondered what school memories this person had.

Should I go?  What will it be like seeing some of them again?  I realized that I do not know these people anymore.  And while the reunion would give me chance to reconnect with a few of them…Would they remember me???
